The person who can read but does not do so has no advantage of the person who can.
History reveals, nearly all great and successful leaders be they business, political, scientific, ,military, social or religious leaders, have a common trait, they are intensely curious and this leads them to be voracious readers. The leader need not only be someone at the very top, he or she could be but at any level in a hierarchy.
One may ask, 'Why read when there are so many different options to get information and knowledge?' True, there are indeed many options to receiving information such as digital media, television, movies, theatre, social media etc.
First there is the problem of the sheer quantum of information, it tends to be overwhelming in volume.
Secondly, almost all these other forms of information have to be consumed at the pace at which it is delivered and the consumer has little or no choice of the rate of absorption of information. Information is not the same as stimuli. We may get stimulated but yet learn or retain little.
Information received, has to be digested, analysed for relevance, mulled over for applicability before some use is found as to where, when and how that information can be used or deployed.
Reading has the advantage of allowing us to receive and process information at a pace that suits our individual nature and disposition, our natural pace. A pace and volume that we are comfortable with.
Reading also allows the reader to more easily digest and mull over the information provided and can be more easily retrieved for review or application in some manner.
If one wants to increase the possibility of success and savour life then reading is a great choice. Reading is a gift that permits us to be more powerful. What we will do with that power is another matter.
