The importance of art to our intellect

Excess of anything is bad. So it is with our minds.

Our minds are being overwhelmed by explosive quantities of data and information being pumped into our lives daily, causing myriad problems and adversely affecting our peace of mind and well-being.

We are now experiencing 'Intellectual indigestion', a condition, I define as:

"A state of mind caused by being deluged by excessive data and information to a level which impairs the ability of an individual to function effectively and efficiently.

Intellectual indigestion bloats and paralyses the mind making us feel ill at ease.

What could be the solution?

We are mind, body and soul.

We are overfeeding the mind. There is little or no possibility of reducing the quantum of data and information we are continuously bombarded with. However, there is the possibility of feeding the soul, and the food for the soul is emotions. Emotions make us human and help us digest data and information.

Living in a manner that charges the senses by bringing more emotion into our lives to provide 'balance' is an effective solution. Things like love, sport and art can influence the body and emotions.

The arts, be it music, singing, poetry, dance, literature, painting, sculpting, theatre or cinema influence our emotions. Tragedy, suspense, action, comedy, romance, etc. all help us feel alive and more human.

Emotions also help to cement information to memory and bring relevance and the possibility to apply that data and information we acquire to a wider spectrum of useful and interesting purposes.

Let me try to make an association with food and digesting it. Just as the body needs enzymes to digest our food, the body, mind and soul need emotions to help digest the data and information we ingest.

Being a thinker and a man of action by nature, until not long ago I scoffed at artists as useless beings, adding little or no real value to our lives and society.

However, as my mind swelled, my soul hungered for connection, I began to appreciate the power and importance of art in my life. Now I relish life.

Anytime is a good time to connect with our inner self and to feel more complete. If you have been too busy to enjoy the Arts, start now to experience them.

End Note: Though I have mentioned art, things like sport, prayer, yoga, meditation etc. also help us to explore and connect with ourselves and live wholesome lives.
