Climate Change. Is it complicated or complex?

What is the difference between handling complicated and complex problems?

Complicated Problems need Complicated Solutions,

Complex Problems need Simple Solutions.

One of the greatest challenges facing Humanity is 'Climate Change'.

The Earth is a living entity, constantly changing including cooling and warming as it rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun. Our sun also rotates and is in constant motion in an infinitely expanding galaxy.

This is why climate changes naturally and slowly over thousands of years. What has happened is the indiscriminate and irresponsible deployment of human ingenuity that has resulted in a destructive pace of man-made climate change.

When we examine the situation, we find it incredibly complex. Naturally, we tend to be intimidated by it. We humans generally try to do good and do the right thing. But when intimidated and feeling helpless we get paralysed shirking away from doing anything let alone taking corrective action.

So we look to clueless governments to solve the problem. The government can't, at least on its own.

We humans are fascinated by technology. Consequently, we almost always try to deploy sophisticated technological solutions to problems.

In every environment, there exist forces lurking to exploit the situation to increase their money or power or both. They inevitably offer complex solutions, generally making the situation worse.

The entire community has to be involved. The first step is raising awareness, sharing information far and wide and raising the levels of concern about the climate change challenge facing humanity.

Complex solutions cost money and take up vast resources. If we can, we should keep it simple, keeping in mind the 'KISS' acronym, 'keep it stupidly simple'. The more complex the problem, the more technology we deploy, whereas the solution is often simple.

Our Earth has been around for 5 billion years and modern man for around 100,000 years. We can learn from nature and solve complex challenges such as 'Climate Change'.

We can learn from and mimic nature to restore ecological balance and ensure the survival of all species including our very own.

Biological solutions are natural solutions. Cost-effective and can easily involve each one of us.

What is the challenge?

To reverse adverse climate changes we need to restore carbon equilibrium. Restoring the levels of carbon in our soil that has been extracted and sent into the atmosphere by man-made industrial activity.

I will cover solutions in greater detail in future articles.
