Everyone seems to be looking for the ultimate. We search wide and far for the truth, whatever that may be: God, Heaven, Nirvana, Enlightenment, etc.
We go on seeking, not exactly sure what we are looking for and rarely, if ever, find what we think we are seeking. Even if we do know, could we be looking in the wrong place?
Many an Avatar, Guru, Rishi, Saviour, Saint, and Jesus have mentioned that, 'The Truth is not to be found elsewhere for it abides within us'.
This brings us to the saying, 'I am the ocean and the ocean is within me'. What exactly does this mean?
The metaphor is deep and rich. If we were to take a drop of water from the ocean, it would have the same properties and qualities that the entire ocean has. Sanatana philosophy speaks of Param Atma and Atma.
This can be explained in energy terms. The entire universe is made of energy, 'Param Atma' meaning the first soul, the universal energy of which each individual Atma (energy) is a part.
Creation and I are not different. I am Creation, and Creation is me. I emerge from this Universal energy, and to it, the individual energy shall return and merge back. The difference between the journeys of various individuals is the route and time we take to merge back into the Universe.
We could go perpetually from one life form to another or directly merge back into Creation depending on our Karma (deeds), our desires and our attachments. If we have unfinished business, then we must keep on reincarnating, living, dying and taking birth again until we bring closure to all open issues.
Just as the drop longs for the ocean, the ocean longs for the drop to return to it, they are part of each other. Only when we have no desires left, no residual ego, no attachments and no anger left nor bad karma will we be able to merge back into the ocean of universal energy.
This spirit, this energy, lies deep within us, in every cell of our being. If we want to consciously merge back, then the only way out is to go within.
How to go within is the subject of another article.
Note: An important clarification has to be made here regarding Karma.
Karma, is based on the fact that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Karma only means, 'every action has consequences'. Karma is non-judgemental it just is.
Hence Karma is not measured by an absolute.
A warrior must fight and even kill to protect those he is responsible for. A hunter must hunt to feed his family; a farmer will unintentionally kill countless little creatures when he tills and farms the land. These are not considered bad karma; they are simply part and parcel of existence and life.
However, wanton killing, causing destruction and hurting other humans and creatures are all considered bad karma.
